One of the main inspirations for our adventure parenting plan is the mini-adventures we’ve had in the past few years: long summer trips to New England, Chincoteague Island, Birmingham, Grand Rapids, music festivals, and other places closer to home. Each of these places have gotten us out of our daily grind / mindset (grindset?) and into a mental space ready to experience the world with our kids.
To be fair, kids are also generally mired in a home/school/life routine that is also not oriented toward adventure. They fight this imposition with all of their might until they reach some breaking point and become adults.
We want to avoid that breaking point. We want to keep the adventure in life.
Our freelance and professorial lives give us the opportunity to travel more than most. This has allowed us to introduce our kids to different places and people than they would meet in their rural Virginian existence. They’ve show them a different world, sometimes a world full of confusing things (naturally), but ultimately a place where the fellowship of humanity is on display through shared meals and a warm place to sleep.
All blog posts titled “Historic Adventure Log” will deal with trips we’ve taken in the past, and what has been so transformational about them. As opposed to up-to-date “Adventure Logs” which will deal with recent adventures and will usually be tied to “Kid Tripping” posts. Anything titled “Kid Tripping” is a specific kid centered post aimed at introducing a place, person, or idea to kids 4-10. There will usually be an accompanying video with these posts.
As always, feel free to comment and ask questions.
Hope you enjoy our little experiment. – AW
