Nothing says fun like a 6 hour drive to the beach in 90+ degree weather with no A.C.! In June we took our yearly vacation to Chincoteague to enjoy the beach and test out our very recently completed Vanagon with a new 2.2 Subaru engine. When I say recent, I mean that it was completed 4 days before we left.
There’s nothing quite like a last minute completion with just 5 minutes of highway driving to make you feel very insecure about driving 6 hours to the beach in heavy traffic and hot weather. Oh, did I mention this is Virginia and we don’t have A.C.? Yeah. Hot.
The drive from our home in the central Shenandoah Valley to the Eastern Shore of Virginia was largely uneventful, with 2 exceptions.
1. I missed the turn onto the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (idiot move)
2. The car completely died at an intersection due to a loose ground cable coming off the battery. (again, idiot move)
Regardless of these minor mishaps, we made it to the camp site and were able to enjoy several days of beautiful weather, empty beaches, voracious mosquitos, and limited sleeping.
You know, I’m a big-ish guy, and that lower bed in the Vanagon is a bit tight with 2 of us. FYI, 90 hipsters we are not. Beware Instagram #vanlife posts.
